The procedure is done personally by Dr. Smith in the office and normally takes about 45 minutes.

It can treat fine lines and wrinkles, improve scarring, lift and tighten the face and neck, and rejuvenate the skin without the cost and downtime of formal surgery.

Laser Lift / CO2 Laser

Laser Lift is a technique using a CO2 laser with a fractionated head to pierce the outer skin and dermis to stimulate natural collagen development that will lift and tighten the outer skin. This procedure is done personally by Dr. Smith in the office and normally takes about 45 minutes. This will rejuvenate sun-damaged skin, reversing and reducing risk of skin cancer. The resurfacing also reduces acne scarring and wrinkles from aging.

The fractionation technique fires 81 laser beams with each activation of the laser and leaves surrounding tissue untouched for much speedier healing time. Overall, Laser Lift can treat fine lines and wrinkles, improve scarring, lift and tighten the face and neck, and rejuvenate the skin. Laser Lift is an excellent choice for a patient who wants improvement in the appearance of the skin of the face and neck without the cost and downtime of formal surgery such as a traditional facelift.

Indications for Laser Lift
  • Rejuvenation of aging skin to restore a youthful glow.
  • Reduction of aging spots on the skin.
  • Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles by inducing natural collagen to tighten skin.
  • Improvement of sagging skin by lifting and tightening skin of the face and neck.
  • Reversal of precancerous skin by helping reverse sun-damaged skin.
  • Additional tightening after facelift surgery for further tightening not possible with surgery alone.
  • Improvement in facial scarring, especially acne scarring.
  • Reduction in active acne, often used with other laser treatments in control of severe acne.
Why fractionated Laser Lift compared to CO2 ablation or physician chemical peels?
  • Reduced downtime, with makeup usually worn again in 7-10 days.
  • Faster healing because tissue that is untouched quickly heals across laser piercings.
  • Pinpoint accuracy, allowing Dr. Smith to target or spare tissue that requires special care.
  • Increased safety with less chance of pigmentation changes after the procedure.
  • Natural induction of collagen without chemicals used to stimulate collagen production.
  • Minimal discomfort. Most patients use only ointment and Tylenol after the procedure.
  • Office-based nonsurgical procedure requiring only oral and topical anesthesia. IV sedation with a CRNA is available in Dr. Smith's office if desired.
  • Long-lasting results. Skin will continue to tighten for 6 months and generally give a tightened appearance for 2 or more years. Some patients repeat the procedure every 1-2 years for continued improvement.
What to expect after Laser Lift
  • Redness and warmth to the skin are expected. Heat felt after the procedure is necessary for collagen stimulation and is generally controlled with Tylenol and cold compresses. A thin layer of hydrating gel such as Aquaphor keeps the skin moist and aids healing.
  • A superficial burn appearance is normal. The laser creates a second-degree burn only where it penetrates. The outward appearance begins to disappear over a few days as untouched skin begins the resurfacing process. Superficial peeling is usually complete in 7-10 days. In some cases, especially in the neck, Dr. Smith may prescribe a medicated ointment such as Silvadene.
  • Sun exposure should be avoided and sunscreen should be worn. The new baby-skin appearance after Laser Lift needs extra sun protection for the first 6 months after the procedure.

Dermabrasion

Dr. Smith personally does dermabrasion in the office.

This procedure is different than microdermabrasion done by estheticians, where light peeling of the skin is done.

True dermabrasion involves complete resurfacing of the skin in the area treated and is often done with CO2 laser treatment.

Dermabrasion

Dr. Smith personally does dermabrasion in the office. This procedure is different than microdermabrasion done by estheticians, where light peeling of the skin is done. True dermabrasion involves complete resurfacing of the skin in the area treated. Dr. Smith will often do this in conjunction with CO2 laser treatment of the skin.

Indications for dermabrasion
  • Facial scarring, where dermabrasion can help reduce facial scarring by smoothing the scar and feathering skin edges.
  • Acne scarring, especially after active acne is controlled.
  • Rhinophyma of the nose, where dermabrasion can reduce the heavy subcutaneous tissue associated with rhinophyma.
Why dermabrasion compared to microdermabrasion or surgery?
  • Much more effective. Dermabrasion goes much deeper than microdermabrasion and gives much better results for facial scars.
  • Surgery may not be needed. For many scars, especially acne pitting, surgery is not the only or even the best approach.
  • Faster healing. Healing is usually complete in 7-10 days for treatment of scars.
  • Minimal discomfort, generally requiring only Tylenol postoperatively.
  • Pinpoint accuracy. Smoothing of the scar with feathering of the edges is more difficult to achieve with surgery alone.
  • Can be repeated easily. Touch-up treatments to fine tune results to the patient's desires are easily done.
  • Office-based nonsurgical procedure requiring only local anesthesia and no suturing.
What to expect after dermabrasion
  • Deep abrasion of the skin. Depending upon the scar treated, this may range from superficial to deeper in the skin. Aquaphor gel and/or antibiotic ointment will be recommended while healing.
  • Minimal pain. The area of treatment often looks much worse than the discomfort the patient feels. Keeping the area moist and clean along with routine Tylenol is recommended.
  • More delayed healing compared to the surrounding skin where only laser treatment was done. Redness in this area usually persists for 3-4 weeks.

Scar Revision and Earlobe Repair

Scar revision is not necessarily a single procedure but involves many different techniques to get the best cosmetic result. Some scars are raised and irregular, while some are depressed and pitted. Others involve tissue deformity such as torn ear lobes or defects left by ear gauges. Depending on the size, shape, age, and location of the scar, Dr. Smith will offer various treatments to best correct the scar defect. Most scars are cosmetic defects and procedures to correct them are considered cosmetic.

Indications for scar revision
  • Presence of an unsightly scar from any cause can generally be improved with modern plastic surgery techniques.
  • Presence of deformity. Patients with torn ear lobes often find wearing earrings impossible until this is corrected.
  • Disqualification for military service. Many service branches will not admit candidates with certain defects such as large piercings with ear gauges.
Why scar revision as opposed to other treatment?
  • Most effective. Generally, other than allowing a scar to age or mature, no other treatment exists to improve the appearance of a scar other than techniques of scar revision.
  • Improves deformity. Scar revision will normally improve a deformity to allow improved function and appearance.
What to expect after scar revision
  • Healing incision. The area where the lesion or scar was treated is closed with sutures. Sutures you see will probably need removal. Sutures deeper in tissue will dissolve over time.
  • Keep the incision clean of crusting and moistened with ointment. Several times daily, crust removal with half-strength peroxide and sterile water using a Q-tip is recommended. Keep the incision moist with antibiotic ointment.
  • Minimal pain. Tylenol as needed is usually all that is needed.
  • Suture removal is generally done in 7-10 days.

Lesion and Mole Removal

Most benign lesions are removed for cosmetic reasons and thus are not covered by insurance. For lesions that are questionable, Dr. Smith may recommend a biopsy prior to definitive care. Many lesions such as skin tags can be removed with a laser. Other lesions are best removed with surgical excision and plastic closure for best cosmetic results. Very large lesions, such as keloids of the ear lobes, may also require further treatment such as injections to prevent recurrence. Consultation with Dr. Smith is the most accurate way to discover the best treatment for the skin lesion or lesions of concern.

Indications for lesion removal
  • Skin lesions that are cosmetically undesirable. In many cases, the best solution is excision and plastic closure.
  • Keloids of ear lobes. Most keloids, particularly of the ear lobes, require excision for complete permanent removal.
  • Skin lesions that may be premalignant. Dr. Smith may recommend a biopsy of any suspicious skin lesion. Excision can be curative and prevent development into skin cancer.
Why lesion removal as opposed to burning or freezing?
  • More effective. Complete removal of a lesion normally keeps it from recurring.
  • Eliminates chance of developing into cancer. Complete removal of a skin lesion is an effective way to prevent development into skin cancer.
  • Repeated treatments are not necessary. Complete removal generally prevents recurrence of even benign lesions.
  • Cosmetically superior results. Other methods such as burning and freezing, often done by dermatologists, can leave white spots or scars where the lesion was.
What to expect after lesion removal
  • Healing incision. The area where the lesion was removed is closed with sutures.
