Treatment Overview

Some physician-performed treatments use more intensive settings than typical spa services and may create more discomfort. A personalized comfort plan can significantly reduce that discomfort while allowing the treatment to be performed as planned.

Not every patient needs every level. Dr. Smith and the clinical team will explain which options are appropriate, when medications should be taken, whether a driver is required, and what to expect before leaving the office.

Level 1 - Oral and topical comfort
  • Oral pain medication and, when appropriate, anti-anxiety medication may be used before or during the procedure.
  • Topical numbing medication may be added based on the treatment area and procedure.
  • Post-procedure pain medication may be provided when clinically appropriate.
Level 2 - Pro-Nox inhaled comfort
  • Pro-Nox may be added to Level 1 options for selected procedures.
  • The patient inhales a fixed nitrous oxide and oxygen mixture through a demand valve and controls when it is used during treatment.
  • The gas clears quickly after use. The clinical team will confirm recovery and whether it is safe to drive, particularly if any other sedating medication was used.
Level 3 - Sublingual sedation
  • For eligible patients, options from the earlier levels may be combined with a prescribed compounded sublingual medication such as MKO Melt.
  • MKO Melt dissolves under the tongue and contains medications used for sedation, pain control, and nausea prevention.
  • Patients receiving this level of comfort must arrange for a responsible adult to drive them home and follow all pre-procedure and discharge instructions.
Level 4 - CRNA-assisted IV sedation
  • For selected procedures and patients, Skin Secrets can arrange monitored IV sedation with a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA).
  • Sedation can be adjusted to the planned procedure and may allow the patient to sleep through treatment when clinically appropriate.
  • IV sedation carries an additional charge. A responsible adult must drive the patient home, and all fasting, medication, and recovery instructions must be followed.
Choosing the right comfort level
  • The goal is to support the strongest appropriate treatment with the least practical discomfort.
  • The recommended level depends on the procedure, expected intensity, health history, medications, anxiety, and pain tolerance.
  • Patients should take only medications specifically prescribed or approved by the Skin Secrets care team for their procedure.
