Treatment Overview

Although Kybella sounds like a wonder drug to dissolve fat, its use is currently limited by the FDA to injection into the submental fat. Experimental use in other body areas is being done, but it is generally too expensive to use in larger body areas where other methods, such as suction lipectomy, are often used with skin removal as standard of care. Use for fat under the eyes is not recommended. Dr. Smith can determine if the fullness under your chin is amenable to the use of Kybella. Dr. Smith may recommend further tightening of the neck skin, such as Laser Lift or Ultherapy, after the fat is dissolved. Consultation with Dr. Smith will allow him to decide whether you are a good candidate for Kybella.

Indications for KYBELLA
  • Dissolving fat in the submental area: fat in the preplatysmal plane confined to the submental area is normally dissolved by injections in 2-3 sessions.
  • Treatment of localized fat in other facial areas: Dr. Smith can decide with you during your consultation if you might be a candidate to consider injection in other areas, such as along the jawline for limited fat removal.
  • Persistent fat in the submental area: even with extreme weight reduction, fat will often persist in the submental area. Fat in this area is often genetic. Kybella allows targeting and permanent removal of this fat without further weight reduction.
Why KYBELLA when compared to other methods of fat removal?
  • Injections alone will destroy fat permanently. Unlike other procedures, such as liposuction, this medication destroys the fat cell permanently.
  • No surgery is needed. Most patients will not require surgery for fat removal in the submental area once Kybella is used. Skin tightening that may be needed after fat is dissolved can often be done later in the office with Laser Lift.
  • Accuracy of fat removal. Other fat-removal methods can leave lumpy areas. This rarely happens with Kybella, and any stubborn areas can be reinjected as needed.
  • Office-based nonsurgical procedure. No anesthesia is needed for Kybella injections, which are usually done 1 month apart for 2-3 sessions.
What to expect after KYBELLA
  • Swelling and redness around the injection region are related to the chemical action that is dissolving the fat. The body removes the dissolving byproducts, creating inflammation in the form of redness and swelling. Normally this resolves within 10-14 days.
  • Minimal discomfort is normally controlled with Tylenol and improves with ice and head elevation.
  • Minimal apparent results after the first treatment are common. Marked improvement is generally noted after the second series of injections. Often only 50% of the original amount of Kybella is used for a third injection.
