Why rhytidectomy as opposed to non-surgical lifting and tightening?

  • Sometimes a patient's needs are best suited to a surgical approach.
  • Patients may seek consultation when they are too advanced to benefit completely from non-surgical procedures alone.
  • Patients with muscle, or platysmal, banding in the neck will need surgery.

What to expect after a rhytidectomy

  • Bruising and swelling are variable. Dressings and drains are used overnight, and wearing a neck or facial compression sling for two weeks is standard.
  • Most patients experience moderate pain requiring Tylenol combined with a narcotic for a few days, then Tylenol alone for about a week.
  • Suture and staple removal is generally done in 7-10 days.
  • Most scarring is hidden in hairlines or along natural skin creases.
  • Additional tightening may be needed. Dr. Smith prefers to do a Laser Lift about 6 weeks after the facelift.
