Liposuction

Fat under the chin can be hereditary and may persist even after significant weight loss. Kybella can help some patients, but prominent neck bands or skin laxity may require another approach. For persistent fat or banding, Dr. Smith may remove fat with suction lipectomy and combine it with platysma plication. This is generally done in his private surgery center and may be paired with a face or neck lift.

Indications for liposuction

  • Persistent fat in the neck or under the chin may remain despite adequate weight loss and can be removed with suction lipectomy.
  • Dr. Smith may add suction lipectomy to face lifting for better jaw and neck line contouring.

Why liposuction as opposed to other ways of removing fat?

  • Suction lipectomy can remove fat quickly when skin tightening alone is not enough for the desired neck contour.
  • Liposuction can be a cost-effective add-on when a patient is already having facelift surgery.

What to expect after liposuction

  • Bruising and swelling are moderate and are usually less extensive if liposuction is done as a standalone procedure. This usually resolves in 7-10 days.
  • Moderate discomfort is common. Most patients take Tylenol with a narcotic for 1-2 days, then just Tylenol for another week.
  • A compression dressing is recommended starting the day after bandages and/or drains are removed. Compression dressing is generally recommended for two weeks to aid healing.
