Brow and Forehead Lifts

Brow and forehead lifts may be done with open surgery, especially when combined with a rhytidectomy, facelift, or eyelid lift. Surgical approaches may range from small incisions to incisions around the hairline.Surgery is not always necessary. Botox, CO2 laser lifting, and Ultherapy may elevate the brows and soften forehead wrinkles while offering an alternative to open surgery.

Indications for brow and forehead lifts

  • Brows that hang at or below the bony rim of the eye socket may appear low and contribute to excessive upper eyelid skin.
  • Forehead wrinkles and lines are caused by frontalis muscle motion and may show that a patient is lifting low brows.

Why a brow and forehead lift as opposed to nonsurgical treatment?

  • Open surgery can last 10 or more years, while Botox, CO2 laser lifting, and Ultherapy are more temporary.
  • A brow or forehead lift may be combined with another open procedure, such as a rhytidectomy or blepharoplasty.

What to expect after a brow and forehead lift

  • Bruising and swelling will be present for several weeks.
  • Numbness, depending on the open approach, may involve much of the forehead and last for many months.
  • Scarring varies by approach, but scars are generally hidden in the hairline. Baldness can affect surgical candidacy.
  • Brow asymmetry can occur during healing and may be improved with postoperative laser lifting or Ultherapy.
  • Pain is usually minimal, and staple or suture removal is typically done in 10 days. Most patients find Tylenol or Tylenol with a narcotic to be adequate for pain relief.
